Cooking Gas Prices in Nigeria: Current Trends and Fluctuations

The cost of cooking gas in Nigeria has experienced notable fluctuations in recent months, raising concerns among households and businesses dependent on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for daily activities. According to market reports, prices have been influenced by a combination of local and global factors, including supply chain disruptions, foreign exchange volatility, and changes in international crude oil prices.

As of January 2025, the average price for a 12.5kg cylinder of LPG ranges between ₦9,000 and ₦12,000, depending on the region. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period last year, when prices hovered around ₦7,000. Stakeholders have attributed this trend to limited domestic production, increased importation costs, and infrastructural challenges in the gas sector.

Efforts are underway to stabilize prices and improve local supply. The Federal Government has introduced initiatives to encourage investments in LPG infrastructure, including the construction of new storage facilities and pipelines. Additionally, stakeholders are advocating for policy reforms to reduce import dependency and promote the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative for cooking and other domestic uses.

Despite these measures, consumers continue to feel the economic strain. Many have called for subsidies or tax reliefs to mitigate the impact of rising prices on low-income households. Experts emphasize the need for long-term strategies to ensure affordability and accessibility of cooking gas across the country.
