National Assembly Demands Thorough Assessment of CNG Technology

The National Assembly has called for a comprehensive assessment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology as part of Nigeria's transition to cleaner and more affordable energy sources. This directive underscores the government's growing interest in promoting CNG as a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, particularly in the transportation and industrial sectors.

During a recent plenary session, lawmakers highlighted the potential of CNG to address the dual challenges of high fuel prices and environmental pollution. They emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation of the technology's suitability, infrastructure requirements, and economic implications to ensure its successful implementation across the country.

The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, stated, "As we move toward diversifying our energy mix, it is imperative to ensure that CNG technology is not only cost-effective but also sustainable in the long term. This assessment will provide the roadmap needed to achieve a seamless transition."

Key areas of focus for the assessment include the availability of CNG infrastructure, such as refueling stations, vehicle conversion centers, and supply chains. Lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to collaborate with private sector stakeholders to fast-track the development of CNG facilities and incentivize investments in the sector.

Furthermore, the National Assembly recommended that the government conduct public awareness campaigns to educate Nigerians about the benefits of CNG, including its cost-efficiency, reduced carbon footprint, and potential to create jobs in the energy sector. "Public buy-in is critical to the success of this initiative," noted Hon. Ibrahim Yusuf, a member of the House Committee on Gas Resources.

The call for an assessment comes amid increasing global recognition of natural gas as a transitional fuel. Nigeria, with its abundant natural gas reserves, is well-positioned to leverage CNG technology to reduce dependency on imported petroleum products and enhance energy security.

Industry experts have lauded the National Assembly's proactive stance, emphasizing that a detailed assessment will help identify potential challenges and opportunities in the adoption of CNG technology. They also noted the importance of aligning this initiative with Nigeria's broader energy policies and climate commitments.
