Kano Govt Signs $5m Deal for CNG Supply, Conversion Program

In a bid to promote cleaner and more affordable energy solutions, the Kano State Government has signed a $5 million agreement to implement a comprehensive compressed natural gas (CNG) supply and vehicle conversion program. The initiative is part of the state's efforts to address the economic impact of rising fuel prices and to transition towards sustainable energy sources.

The agreement, signed with a consortium of local and international energy firms, aims to establish a robust infrastructure for CNG supply across Kano State. This includes the construction of CNG refueling stations, vehicle conversion centres, and training facilities for technicians. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf highlighted the importance of the project, stating, "This initiative will not only reduce transportation costs for our people but also contribute to environmental sustainability by cutting down on carbon emissions."

The CNG conversion program will focus on retrofitting commercial vehicles such as buses, taxis, and tricycles, which are widely used for public transportation in the state. According to the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Mr. Idris Abdullahi, the program is expected to convert over 10,000 vehicles within the first year of operation. "We are committed to ensuring that this program benefits the people of Kano by making transportation more affordable and environmentally friendly," Abdullahi remarked.

The project will also create employment opportunities, with plans to train hundreds of local technicians in CNG vehicle conversion and maintenance. Energy experts have praised the initiative as a step in the right direction, emphasizing the economic and environmental benefits of adopting CNG as an alternative fuel.

The consortium of energy firms involved in the project expressed their readiness to deliver on the agreement. A spokesperson for the group noted that the program would include community engagement and awareness campaigns to educate residents on the benefits of CNG and the conversion process.

The Kano State Government has called on the Federal Government and private investors to support similar initiatives across the country, emphasizing the need for a coordinated approach to addressing Nigeria's energy challenges.

The program is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2025, with the first set of CNG refueling stations and conversion centres scheduled to be operational by mid-year.
